Who is this intruder who renders me so defenseless? Whose hypnosis persuades me to relish this trauma? With my words and breath held hostage my tears proclaim her violence. I savor her sweet asphyxiation and dance to the struggle of her spell. She ignores my invitations and drops in unannounced. She delights in a spontaneous welcoming. She would have me no other way.

This type of laughter is the purest expression of joy. I don’t think it’s possible to taste the flavors of suffering when she casts the spell upon me. She prefers complete control if only for a moment. She is considerate of her power in that way. With giggling tongues on the edge of my breath, her possession is delightful to get lost in. I fall to the floor, clutching my chest, gasping for air, and begging her for more. She will not leave until she’s finished. I would have her no other way.

Jesus taught me to strive for joy. Certainly, there is a time and place to experience the entire spectrum of human emotion. But for my joy, we live a tragic comedy where threat is never real. She knows we are safe. She KNOWS the truth. And the truth has set us free. She sees the comedy in the absurdness of life and we laugh. We have been through hell together. And we laugh in the face of hell. I am already dead and it is Christ who lives in me. Death, where or where is your sting??
