City on a hilL
God sent addicts to teach me sobriety. He sent satanists to teach me His kingdom. Should I be surprised he sent shattered minds to teach me wholeness?
…I’m beginning to see that having multiple personalities is completely normal and only becomes a problem if/when they don’t know about each other, or don’t/can’t freely communicate with each other. Prior to understanding this I was trying to cram all my thoughts, feelings, ideas, likes, dislikes, moods, etc. into a single coherent personality that was responsible for everything. That seems so silly now.
I am an entire city. I have warriors and I have lovers. I have comedians, teachers, chefs, intellectuals, athletes, students, dancers, rulers, builders, and deconstructionists. I have debaters, planners, artists, mathematicians, scientists, geologists, star gazers, and dreamers. And the list goes on and on. The point is, I am a city. And every person in my city has a purpose, a value, a responsibility, and a voice. It’s okay if there’s disagreement in the city sometimes. Let me repeat, IT IS OKAY IF THERE IS DISAGREEMENT SOMETIMES!! I really needed to hear that.
I used to spend an hour or more in pre-prayer just trying to calm down the committee enough for a semi-unified composure before I felt I could actually start talking to God! This is crazy! I felt crazy! I now know that God has something to say to all the members of the board individually. I don’t need to analyze 14 different interpretations of what God is speaking, looking for the single “right” perspective that fits everyone perfectly -not going to happen! We just need to be willing to work together, to be patient, to be kind, and trust the Lord.
A city on a hill is visible to everyone. Nothing is hidden. What is done in one part of the city is open for all of it to see. Each contributing district is beneficial for the city as a whole. It takes all the parts of the community to flourish. In this regard, a city on a hill is unified.
A city in the valley may have some hidden parts that can’t be seen. Or the whole city may even be hidden. It may not even be aware of any of its parts. It cannot fathom the idea of working together. It’s a lost city. I will continue to build my city on the hill.
